The ManKind Project challenges each man to find and develop his own life’s mission ... and to live that mission fully with the support of a powerful network of other men. Men involved in MKP live with a sense of purpose grounded in their own unique experiences. With a committment to self-awareness and universalism - they create a web of interconnected communities working to change the world for the better.

The Ron Hering Mission of Service Award

Each year the ManKind Project recognizes one man or a group of men from each community who is taking action to live his mission in the world.

If you don't have a clear sense of purpose, the ManKind Project will help you get in touch with your own unique calling in the world. If you are living a mission in your life, MKP will help you get even further clarity about your mission and provide you with a broad community of support to help you live your purpose.

The men listed below are recipients of the Ron Hering award!

Personal Mission:

I bring more integrity into the world by modeling accountability, mentoring the uninitiated and honoring a "second chance" concept in supporting my fellow man.

In 2001, he purchased a town home complex in Atlanta, Georgia which now houses up to 375 formerly incarcerated men (and soon opening to women) for a 3 month-plus program preparing them to successfully re-enter society, thus reducing recidivism from nearly 60% to 20%. Alan puts his heart, soul, head and his own dollars into this work. He sees Robert Bly as his mentor and long-time personal friend and brought Bly and his musicians to a fund-raising event on behalf of MKP Santa Barbara, Boys-to-Men and Domestic Violence Solutions in 2009. Of the nearly 1,000 attendees, Alan donated over 200 tickets to various non-profits including 100 to active military personnel and veterans. Personal Mission:

To create a world of connections by being loving, powerful, spiritual and playful.

Action in the World:

While visiting his mother-in-law over a 2-year period, Allan began connecting with men who were lonely and had few if any visitors. As Allan gained the trust of these men, they opened up and shared deeply with him as he did with them including helping them with personal things. Men continued to show up for Allan to connect with long after his mother-in-law died. For one homeless man who had had a stroke he was able to take him to movies, ball games, swimming and help him with his social security paperwork; for another man he was able to help him with his extreme anxiety through visualizations and massage. This man helped Allan plan a building project and followed it through photos Allan brought to him. These and other men Allan spent time with completed their life journeys. The son of one man told Allan that he was his father’s best friend. It was an honor to be trusted by these men and walk a little with them during the final years of their lives.

Personal Mission:

To Walk in the NOW on Their Path with Every Man, Woman and Child Whom I Encounter on The Way of Life Today.

Action in the World:

"What I do is not really a Job. It's more a vocation, a calling, a gift, a talent. For the past 7-8 years, I have "worked" at a church 2 blocks from my house. They have a rummage sale every week, and I help set up when I can. The church also has a Men's Shelter with 2 dozen rooms (almost always full) and I help run support groups for homeless and/or recovering guys, give "spiritual direction" (although so informally that the men don't even realize that that is what I'm doing”), tutoring, teaching English, Spiritual Director, cooking, Bible Study groups…and anything and everything, it seems. I have also done Hospice Vigils (formerly called Death Watches) since my monastery days and am on call with numerous homes, hospices and hospitals in Albuquerque.”
