Organizational Structure
The ManKind Project® (MKP) is a nonprofit educational and training organization for men, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization incorporated in Illinois. The cornerstone workshop of MKP is called the New Warrior Training Adventure (NWTA), a weekend-long personal growth retreat for men offered over 1700 times worldwide since 1985.
MKP serves as the umbrella organization for interdependent Communities who host the NWTA and offer follow-up groups and workshops locally. The structure of MKP continues to evolve to meet the changing needs of regional cultures and communities. Today there are 8 regions; Australia, Canada, French-Speaking Europe, German-Speaking Europe, New Zealand, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States. Each of these regions possess at least one center, or community that presents the NWTA, with the US home to 29 centers and a number of smaller communities. These communities have representation on the organization's Board of Directors, the Project Council. An Executive Committee serves the organization between meetings of the Project Council.
MKP has its origins in the mythopoetic men's movement of the early 1980s, drawing heavily on the works of Robert Bly, Robert L. Moore, and Douglas Gillette. In 1984, Rich Tosi, a former Marine Corps officer; Bill Kauth, a social worker, therapist, and author; and Ron Hering, Ph.D. (Curriculum Studies), a university professor; created an experiential weekend for men called The New Warrior Training. As the popularity of the training grew, they formed a New Warrior Network organization which would later become The Mankind Project.
Created in 1984 in Milwaukee by three men with backgrounds in educational psychology, engineering, and therapy, the training is structured as a modern equivalent of the initiation rites that traditional societies use to mark the transition into manhood. Nearly 42,000 men have experienced the NWTA. Trainings are led by a small team of highly experienced certified men and a large volunteer staff of local men. Physical and emotional safety are primary concerns for everyone staffing a New Warrior Training Adventure. Read more about the history of The ManKind Project here.
Each of our geographical communities is also a not-for-profit or charitable organization.
